How can I prevent my baby from putting the NUK Soother into his mouth upside down?

From our experience we would advise you to keep putting the soother back into the correct position. Continue doing this until your child learns and accepts which is the correct way.

Why do we recommend this?

Firstly it is worth mentioning that babies have an innate desire to suck and this desire should be fulfilled. Breastfeeding does this in the most natural way. This type of sucking was of course the model used for the NUK soother design.

The NUK shape is designed such that baby’s sucking action is as close as possible to the natural sucking and swallowing actions required when breastfeeding. This ensures that the lower jaw and facial muscles are trained correctly.

By using NUK Soothers intensive training of baby’s jaw is also possible in between mealtimes. The soother will calm your baby in a natural way.

However, this also means that the soother should be used in a specific way and not just be “deposited” in baby’s mouth.

Only when a NUK Soother is used correctly in this way to soothe your child, to prevent damage that can be caused by thumb-sucking and to permit intensive training of the jaw between mealtimes, will the full benefits of the NUK shape and its scientific origins be gained – those of supporting the healthy and natural development of your child’s jaw.

A child may possibly consider the soother a toy, finding it interesting to playfully place it upside-down in his or her mouth. Or the child may be used to other soother shapes, e.g. symmetrical cherry shapes that are always ‘the right way up’, so it makes no difference which way the soother lies in the mouth.

For this reason it is worth being patient to show your child how to use the NUK Soother correctly.

Incidentally: If the soother is occasionally turned around in your child’s mouth, this will not lead to jaw and tooth malformations. This is because the NUK Soother has such a soft and flexible baglet, that in this case only a very small amount of pressure is applied to the infantile oral cavity. Quite the opposite, in fact, of the damage that can result from continuous thumb-sucking – and the experts are agreed on this.

Why is the NUK soother shape not round shaped (cherry), as it is with other brands?

NUK-Form beim Beruhigungssauger

This is because nature provided the model for the special NUK Soother shape. In accordance with nature’s example, the NUK shape was designed as much as possible to simulate the shape of the mother’s nipple when breastfeeding.

Why does this shape also form the basis of the NUK Soother?

Firstly it is worth mentioning that babies have an innate desire to suck and this desire should be fulfilled. Breastfeeding does this in the most natural way. This type of sucking was of course the model used for the NUK soother design.

The NUK shape for teats and soothers is consequently designed such that the sucking action requires largely identical sucking and swallowing actions to those typically required when being breastfed. This also ensures that the lower jaw and facial muscles are trained.

By using NUK Soothers, intensive training of the jaw is possible even between meal times. The soother will thus calm your child in a natural way.

If a NUK Soother is used correctly in this way to soothe your child, to prevent damage that can be caused by thumb-sucking and to permit intensive training of the jaw between mealtimes, then the full benefits of the NUK shape and its scientific origins will be gained – those of supporting the healthy and natural development of your child’s jaw.

There's water inside the soother after boiling!

NUK Air System

All NUK soothers have an AIR SYSTEM. A vent ensures that the air can be expelled from the baglet when the gums press this together. This way the soother always adapts perfectly to fit the infant's oral cavity. When the soother is being boiled water may penetrate this tiny hole and get into the baglet.

Our tip: After boiling, hold the soother upside down and with clean hands, press out any remaining water immediately.

After sterilising in boiling water the NUK soother completely collapsed!

This is a very rare occurance. If a vacuum has built up inside the soother, this can be eliminated in most cases by a simple trick: pull short and sharp on the baglet. Don't worry, as the baglet and mouth shield are mounted so that they are "Pull-resistant".

Such a vacuum in the baglet can arise when, for example, after boiling the AIR SYSTEM becomes blocked. This is why: A vent ensures that the air can escape out of the baglet when the gums push this together. This way the soother adapts to fit perfectly to the baby's oral cavity. Should this trick not work, then return the soother to us and we will replace it.
